Raising a Mindful Family by Modeling it

One way to build a more compassionate and conscious family is through mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the simple technique of paying attention to the present moment in a nonjudgemental way.

Once we calm the thoughts in our head, we are able to tap into a part of ourselves that we lose sight of in our day-to-day busyness and schedules.

That part of us that is truth, kindness, creativity, peace, and love. Enabling connect within and with others in a meaningful, positive way and even decrease anxiety and increase our happiness.

Mindfulness is available to all of us

It comes from taking time to breathe, to be still, and begin shifting our perspective to what is going right, instead of what is going wrong (as we do too often, myself included).

It’s not about eliminating negative thoughts. We are human.

Instead, it’s about developing a practice so we begin recognizing when we’re in a negative mindset sooner, so we can bring ourselves back.

Our Zen Masters – our Children

Our babies come into this world with presence. We see it in their play, their imagination, and how big they feel all their emotions –  the good ones and the tough ones. We can learn from them.

Yet, as they get older, they begin to adapt to the way we live and think. They too benefit from a mindfulness practice to bring themselves back, experience greater ability to focus, develop loving kindness, and find relief from difficulties they face.

Yes, please. How do I teach mindfulness to my children?

Well, it’s not as easy as just signing them up for a class.

The best way for our children to learn mindfulness is for us to model it.

Through a shift in our own mindset, we can approach hardships and even our children’s failings with gentle awareness, acceptance, curiousity, and kindness.

It’s in the Research

Check out this Mindfulness for Children article from the New York Times, where they share the benefits of mindfulness for children and give some tools to practice at home.
